I’m excited to share this dish with y’all. This is a recipe that my mom got off of the radio long before I was ever born. The name of the actual dish is Crock Pot Stew. Funny enough, she’s never cooked this in a crock pot, but kept the name. She taught me how to make it in a dutch oven, a staple in our household for the low and slow dishes.
This is one of my favorite, homey meals. The only downside is that it’s not really conducive to a weeknight cook. I decided to give it a try in my instant pot to see if I could change that. It worked! I guess we will be calling Crock Pot Stew, Instant Pot Stew from now on!
I love the simplicity of this dish. Over the years, I have added only two things to this very basic recipe. I’ve added fresh chopped garlic, and a little beef paste. I love the depth that both additions provide this wonderful dish. It’s still a very simple dish, most definitely a great fit for our Frugal Fridays! The entire dish, with noodles, will be less than $25 at the grocery store. You will easily get 4 hearty servings as well.

Recipe Highlights:
- You can add more salt and pepper to this, it’s to taste. We tend to add a bit more pepper than the 1/2 teaspoon that the recipe calls for.
- If you would prefer, you can cook this on the stove. If so,
- Sear beef and then add chopped onions. Cook until translucent. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes more.
- Add all other ingredients and then bring to boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally and adding water as needed until the beef is tender. Approximately 3 hours.
- If cooking in the crock pot:
- Follow the steps for searing beef and adding onions and garlic.
- Add all ingredients to a crock pot and cook on either low or high following the time for each.
